Algerian Arabs - The Algerian Arab people make up 19,851,000 of the Algerian population which
is roughly 60% of the total population. There are about 21,427,000 Algerian Arabs total including those living
in other countries. Over 94% of the Algerian Arabs are Muslim. Less than 1% (.24% are Christian) Of the .24%
who are Christian, 75% of them are Independent Christians, 20% are Catholic, 5% are Protestants.
Virtually all of these people are Muslim. They observe the five basic “pillars of Islam which are: A Muslim must affirm that
there is no god but Allah & Mohammad is his prophet, they pray five times a day facing Mecca, they give “alms
generously, they fast during Ramadan, they must make at least one trip to Mecca in their lifetime.
Kabyle of Algeria -There are 3,099,000 Kabyle people in Algeria. This makes up
about 10% of the 32,848,000 population of Algeria. Almost all of these people are Muslim, but are
not always as strict in observing the Koran’s laws.
They celebrate the usual Muslim holidays and visit friends and neighbors during these times, but they have
kept many of their traditional beliefs especially their pre-Islamic saint worship and their wedding celebrations which last for several days.
Less than 1% Kabyles have converted to Christianity. They have access to the New Testament in their
language and the “Jesus” film and some Christian radio broadcasts are available, but before this people
can be reached for Christ, the stronghold of Islam must first be broken through prayer.
