Boran, Southern Oromo - The Oromo are the largest most widely dispersed people group in Ethiopia, making up a population of 4,698,960 of
the total population of 73,053,286. There are approximately a dozen tribal clusters. They prefer to be called “Oromo” but are technically named
the Galla. They migrated from the Horn of Africa about four centuries ago. They dominated the government and military classes of the Ethiopian
Empire. They speak mutually intelligible dialects of a language called Gallinya.
The Arusi-Galla boys are taught to use a spear and begin training at an early age to become warriors. Traditionally, men ready to marry were
expected to present to their brides part of a man who they had killed. The killing of a man customarily was a part of becoming a full-fledged
adult as well as part of certain festivals. Although this tradition survives, wild animals are now used instead of humans.
The majority of this people group are also Muslim; however, their traditional religion is still practiced by about 12%. Their ethnic worship is of a
supreme being called Waqa. They sacrifice livestock in his honor, however Muslim influence is evident.
Macha - Information is still being gathered for this people group.
