Fulakunda - There are 1,549,000 Fulakunda people in Senegal. The Fulakunda are a strong Muslim people who follow the teachings of Mohammed. The adhere strongly to the virtues and good morals, such as justice, honesty, generosity, and patience. They think of the village as a place of rules and obligations-a place for socially acceptable behavior. On the other hand, they believe the bush is a place of freedom, where they can act according to their own needs. They hate to feel alone, however, they thend to hide their feelings, and the need for love and companionship is not expressed in public. Only through songs is this need freely acknowledged.

There are some Christian resources available to them, but only a small number of Fulakundas have become Christians. They are very devoted to Islam. Very few of them can read, perhaps this is why although the Bible is translated into their language, not many have read it. Although they may lack a scholarly grasp on book knowledge, they are considered skilled social analysts. Some elders have traveled in many countries and know of the language, people, and culture of each.

Wolof Wolof - The Wolof people make up 4,408.000 of the population of Senegal. This people group can be divided into three classes: the freeborn, those born into slavery, and the artisans. The freeborn class ranges from high-ranking noblemen to common peasant farmers. The slaves are made up of the Wolof whose parents were slaves, therefore having been born into slavery they must continue to serve their parents masters. The artisans are considered a low class of Wolof society. They include blacksmiths, leather workers, and musicians.

Virtually all Wolof claim to be Muslims. Being a religion of works, a Muslim must affirm that there is only one god called Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. They must pray five times a day facing Mecca and give generously. He must fast during Ramadan and he must make a pilgrimage at least once in his lifetime to Mecca. Although Wolof believe this way, they also hold to some of their pre-Islamic beliefs. They believe that both good and evil spirits, as well as witches exist in each village. They think that bad spirits live in bush or tall trees and the often wear amulets to ward them off.
